What to Do When You’ve Got a Bad Boss

Dec12

Have you ever wondered why a lot of the people the world seems to give Authority to are jerks? No really, there are more bad politicians and business managers than there are good. And if they’re good to begin with, you know that will change sooner or later. Or is that just the image that popular media has cultivated; only the bad guys get publicity after all.

Businesspeople constantly complain about bad bosses, nonetheless. The charismatic boss that sells your soul to the devil without your consent, the boss that is so incompetent yet comes up smelling like roses from every disaster he creates, the boss that takes all the credit for their subordinates’ work, the anal-retentive boss who exhorts you and your colleagues every morning to use grammar check software that he himself installed – there are many kinds of bosses that make a day in the office seem like a lifetime in a war-zone. Consider these tactics when you want to survive your boss and the work day.

Never show a vulnerability. They say that commerce is a shark-infested tank. There are people who wait for their subordinates to show a weakness then exploit it for their own gains, whether it is to look good or for personal enjoyment. If you’ve got a dictator for a boss, one who likes to keep a tight grip on the reins of fear set on his or her staff, then this is a good thing to keep in mind.

Don’t play their mind games. There are bosses that think that competition is a very good thing, and spend their spare time alienating each and every one of your colleagues from everyone else. Maintain a good relationship with the people in your work-place. You can’t do your job properly if you have to be looking over your shoulder all the time. If you are united against your boss, then that at least, is one less worry.

Cover your bases. If you’ve got a bad boss, make sure that whatever bad situations he puts himself and the staff in will be of minimal damage to you.

Get a better job. If your boss’ antics are starting to heavily affect your work and perhaps even personal life, then it’s time to make a change. Quit. If you go against the higher-ups too much, they’re liable to fire you anyway. If you have to take the crap they’re dishing out, you ought to be paid better.

Go for his job. If your boss is slacking, if he goes golfing once too often while leaving the responsibilities to others, why not take the reins yourself.

Of course, not every manager or VP or CEO is that bad, but if you get a boss you absolutely cannot work with, then the things mentioned above are a few of the things that you can do. Everybody deserves a work life that is satisfying and fulfilling after all.
